Q1.  Find the average of scores of the tests taken by Ram, given his scores were 92, 94, 88, 90, 90, 86, 90?

Solution
(92+94+88+90+90+86+90)/7
subtract 90 from each
(2+4-2+0+8-4+0)/7=0
hence average is 90

Q2. The monthly incomes of Ravi, his wife & their son are Rs.4000, Rs.2000 and Rs.3000 respectively. What is the average income of the family?

(4000+2000+3000)/3=3000

Q3. In a cricket tournament, Kapil played 7 games. His scores in the games were 71, 49, 52, 46, 48, 52, 53. Find the average score?

(71+49+52+46+48+52+53)/7=
371/7=53

Q4.  Jeevan purchased three dozen mangoes at Rs 7 per dozen two dozen at Rs 8.50 & one dozen at Rs 10. What is the average cost per dozen of the mangoes purchased by Jeevan?

Solution
(3x7+2x8.5+10)/(3+2+1)=48/6=8

Q5. The average age of 5 boys is 19 years. A new boy joins them & their average age increases to 20 years. What is the age of new boy?

•  25 years
•  24 years

Solution
 Combined age of 5 boys = 5 x 19 = 95

Combined age of 6 boys = 6 x 20 = 120

Age of new boy = 120 - 95 = 25

Þ Inc in age = (20 - 19) = 1

Age of new boys = old avg ± (increase/decrease)

=19 + 6 = 25 

Q6. 7 kg of wheat having a rate of Rs 14 per kg is mixed with 4 kg of wheat having a rate of Rs 8.50. What is the average rate per kg of the mixture?

(7x14+4x8.5)/11=(98+34)/11=12

Q7. A batsman scored an average of 55 runs in the: first 6 tests. If the first is not counted and the seventh is counted then is average score goes up to 57. If the score in first test was 50 runs, find his score in the seventh test?

Solution

Run scored M first 6 tests = 6 x 55 = 330

Run scored in 2nd to 7th test = 6 x 57 = 342

Run scored in 7th test - Run scored in 1st test =

Run scored in 2nd to 7th test - Run scored in 1st to 6th)

R - 50 = 342 - 330;   \ R = 62 

Q8. The average marks of three sections in tenth class were 76, 79 & 80 respectively If the number of students in these three sections were 70, 60, 55 respectively Find the average marks of the tenth class?

Avg. score = (70x76+79x60+80x55)/(70+60+55)=78.16

Q9. The sales recorded by a salesman in 6 days of a week were as follows: Rs 20,000 per day of the first 3 days. Rs 1600 on Thursday, Rs 24000 on Friday and on Saturday it was Rs 30,000. Find the average sales per day?

Avg. sales =(60000+16000+24000+3000)/6=130000/6=21667 

Q10.10 years ago, the average age of a family of 4 members was 24 years. Two children having been born (with age difference of 2 yrs, the present average age of the family is the same. The present age of the youngest child is:

Solution

Combined age 10 yr ago = 24 X 4 = 96

Combined age presently = 6 x 240 = 144

Combined age of children

= 144 - (96 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10) = 8

Let age of younger be x

Then 8 = x + x + 2 = 2x + 2;

\ x = 3
